What is Business Affairs Up To this Summer?
Just because students are gone doesn’t mean the hard work stops. Business Affairs keeps UNC Charlotte running throughout the summer in a multitude of different ways. See a glimpse of what your business affairs colleagues are up to, and thank you for all your hard work this summer!
Facilities Management
The grounds crew works year-round to maintain the campus’ beautiful landscape. Some of their areas include residence life and main campus. They weed, mow, trim landscaping and fix equipment. UNC Charlotte is a large campus, so it takes coordination and dedication to maintain.
Environment Health and Safety is busy conducting fire drills for housing and residence life facilities, athletics and academic buildings, as well as installing and conducting AED inspections throughout campus.
Business Services
Lots of construction is happening through Business Affairs. An Amazon Just Walk Out is being installed, Bistro 49 is transforming into a more upscale restaurant called “Bistro,” and Crown Commons is undergoing renovations. Business Services also sponsored the summer blood drive in coordination with the American Red Cross and are preparing for faculty, staff and students to download the CATS-Pass App so they can more easily access the light rail.
Another exciting venture is CASSI, which stands for Connected Autonomous Shuttle Supporting Innovation. It is a fully-electric, self-driving shuttle currently operating on the Greek Village Route for a six-month-pilot program. Learn more on the PaTS website.
Safety & Security
Police and Public Safety have stayed busy keeping campus safe as students still attend school, staff works and summer camps commence. Emergency Management has also been busy planning for a variety of training and exercises for the fall semester, continuing with the roll-out and implementation of the NinerReady program to promote individual preparedness and providing ongoing support of new student orientation at the SOAR resource fair and presentations at the new student family panels.
Financial Services and the Budget Office
Fiscal year-end keeps many many financial services staff and its partner offices busy over the summer and into fall. There are over 470 tasks on the fiscal year 2023 team calendar. Around 30 staff members from Financial Services, Financial Systems Support and the Budget Office are involved in completing these tasks.
The budget office has had a busy summer. In conjunction with University Advancement, the budget office continues to monitor all news coming out of Raleigh related to the development of the biennial budget. June and July were consumed with closing FY 2022-23, which included obtaining OSBM’s approval of our $38.8M carry forward request and rolling all the salary and operating budgets for the general fund and non-general fund in Banner from FY 2022-23 into FY2023-24. For August, the budget office will be preparing for the process of evaluating the campus’ current tuition and fees to ascertain if changes need to be requested, analyzing our capital budget requests and continuing to prepare for the passage of the state budget bill.
Human Resources
Human Resources has welcomed two new employees, Alexandria Flippins and Tiffani McCain, to the senior leadership team this summer. As of June 2023, she serves as the Director of Talent Acquisition & Compliance. She is the primary point of contact for EHRA/SHRA permanent / temporary staff, and student employee recruitment and selection, as well as the point of contact for the management of EHRA/SHRA, temporary staff and student employment compliance programs. Flippins has been working in human resources, specifically recruitment and selection for over 10 years.
Tiffani McCain is the Director of Staff Position & Performance Management and first joined UNC Charlotte in 2017 as a Compensation Consultant before transitioning to the Assistant Personnel Director for Academic Affairs in 2020. She has a wealth of institutional knowledge and has experience in classification/compensation during her time at IBM and George Washington University.
