Get to know: John Bogdan, associate vice chancellor for safety and security

John Bogdan, a retired Army colonel, began his new duties on Jan. 2, 2019.

What attracted you to the AVC of safety and security role at UNC Charlotte?
As a career Army officer and military police officer, my life has been dedicated to safety and security, as well as constant study and self improvement. I saw this position as the perfect blend of my skills and passions.

What do you think is the biggest issue facing universities today re: safety and security?
Balancing the need for safety and security with an open and creative environment promoting growth among our students and ensuring families of their safety.

What do you hope to accomplish in Safety and Security in your first year?
I hope to learn the strengths of all the departments and help integrate those strengths to improve our team.

Describe your first week on the job in five words or less.
Informative, calm, enlightening and refreshing

As a newcomer to the area, do you have a favorite spot in Charlotte yet?
We’ve truly been enjoying all the Queen City has to offer; I love the greenways, the shops in South Park and of course OMB (Olde Mecklenburg Brewery)!

What is a fact about you that surprises most people?
I’m fifth out of seven children.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?
You can’t lead people by trying to copy someone else — be yourself.

You can only listen to three songs for the rest of your life. What are they?
Misty Mountain Hop by Led Zeppelin, Viva La Vida by Coldplay and Fire by Jimi Hendrix.

What are your hobbies outside of work?
Running, hiking, biking and building furniture.
