Wassum’s Last Blood Drive Exceeds Goal

When asked why he’s so passionate about giving blood, Keith Wassum always responds, “Because, it’s needed and I can. Not everyone can donate, so I do.”

Thursday, June 20, marked Keith’s 12th and final Business Services and Red Cross co-sponsored blood drive on campus. He and the Red Cross always set a collection goal for each event; this one was 58.

The UNC Charlotte community didn’t disappoint. Seventy-eight donors, seven of which were first timers, showed up ready to give. As a result, the Red Cross was able to secure 72 units, far exceeding the goal.

Jillian Butler, senior program director of recruitment process and planning for the Red Cross, reflected on her time with Keith. “He has been an amazing supporter of the American Red Cross. Nine years ago, he helped launched the 49ers4Life UNCC blood drive on campus, which has collected 6,309 units of blood and impacted the lives of approximately 18,927 blood recipients to date,” she said. “His desire to help those in need is inspiring, and we will miss him terribly!”
